John Owens

John Owens trained in technical theatre at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and after a few years dabbling in Stage Management and Lighting settled into a career of Sound for Theatre, in both Design and Engineering.

John has worked extensively with building based theatre companies such as The Almeida Theatre, The Donmar Warehouse and the Royal National Theatre, as well as commercial projects in The West End of London and worldwide.

Most memorable productions include Ninagawa’s Peer Gynt, Sir Peter Hall’s Hamlet and Piaf, The Oedipus Plays, the Bacchai (including Epidavros amphitheatre in Greece) A Little Night Music and Lady in the Dark for Paul Groothius at the Royal National Theatre.

John’s design work in collaboration with other designers includes Sondheim’s Company and Passion (both West End), The Front Page, Nine, The Fix, Enter the Guardsman, Into The Woods, Green Fields and Beyond, Merrily We Roll Along (Donmar Warehouse), The Judas Kiss (NY Broadway); A Doll’s House (West End and Broadway) and The Blue Room and Private Lives (Broadway).

Production Engineering work includes Mary Poppins, Democracy, Vincent in Brixton (West End), My Fair Lady, Anything Goes (Royal National Theatre & West End), Saturday Night Fever (Tour), York Millennium Mystery Plays (York Minster), The King & I, Sideman (West End), De La Guarda at the Roundhouse, Oklahoma (RNT and West End), The Magic Flute (Germany & Norway), Lady in the Van (West End), Mamma Mia (Madrid), We Will Rock You (Madrid), On Your Toes (London and Tokyo)

John has acted as Associate Sound Designer many times including Romeo and Juliet the Musical (West End), Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling, and the forthcoming Broadway transfer of Death of a Salesman

Individual Sound Design Credits include When Harry Met Sally (West End), The Three Sisters, Dead Funny (Chichester Festival Theatre) Tape, How To Lose Friend and Alienate People (Soho Theatre)

John also designed and engineered the famous Internet Scene for Patrick Marber’s Closer, which has played RNT, West End, Broadway, several countries in Eastern Europe and Russia!

John was a founder and director of Aura Sound Design Ltd from 1998 - 2004.
